Updated Temporary Rules, Preferred Lies in Play 5-7-24

GISBORNE GOLF CLUB

LOCAL RULES   Revised October 12th 2023     

To be read in conjunction with Revised Rules of Golf (2023)

  1. Out of bounds. All ground beyond club boundaries and all beyond OOB stakes (white stakes with black tops) on left of 17th & 18th holes, right of 13th, 14th and 18th holes and beyond stakes surrounding clubhouse including carparks.
  2. Staked trees. If a staked tree or staked shrub interferes with a player’s stance or area of swing, the ball must be lifted, without penalty, (cleaned if necessary) & dropped in accordance with Rule 16 1a (immovable obstruction)
  3. Penalty areas. Defined by yellow or red stakes or red lines. On Hole 4, the green side edge of the timber sleepers is the boundary of the Penalty area. Any ball touching the sleeper is deemed to be in the penalty area.
  4. Drop Zone markers. Blue stakes (drop within 1 club length). Nearest zone must be used.
  5. Ground Under Repair(a) All areas defined by lines or stakes. (b) wheel ruts in general area (c) embedded stones in general area and Animal damage in bunkers (relief not available from (c) if stance only affected. (d) Garden beds defined by sleepers, rocks, bricks or mulch (compulsory drop)
  6. Solidly Embedded Stones/Rocks that interfere with the players stroke or swing are to be treated as abnormal course condition.

This means that loose stones and embedded stones that can easily be removed (with a tee) are NOT abnormal course conditions, they are loose impediments and are to be treated as such.

  1. Immovable Obstructions within 2 Club lengths of Green. If within 2 club lengths of green and ball within 2 club lengths of Immovable obstruction (on line to hole) then free relief available under Rule. 16. 1.
  2. (Does not apply for Victorian Men’s and Victorian Women’s Pennant matches).

Ball lost or Out of Bounds. In addition to stroke & distance penalty (Rule18.1,) the player may opt under a 2-stroke penalty to drop a ball anywhere between (a) where the ball is likely to be or (b) crossed OOB) and 2 club lengths onto the fairway no nearer the hole than (a) or (b)

  1. All stakes, control ropes, Wire Hoops and posts are immovable obstructions (Rule 16-1a applies).

Penalty for breach of local rules. Stroke play-TWO strokes. Match Play-LOSS of hole.

Note. ‘General area’ is all areas of the course except penalty areas (‘hazards’), Bunkers and putting green and tee of hole being played (Previously ‘through the green’)

TEMPORARY LOCAL RULES

To be read in conjunction with Revised Rules of Golf (2023)

1 – TREE ROOTS IN FAIRWAY

If a player’s ball lies in the fairway of the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots, the tree roots are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under

Rule 16.1b

Relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.

2 – ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITIONS

The following are to be treated as Ground Under Repair and relief MAY be taken as per Rule 16 (Nearest point of complete relief no nearer the hole)

– AREAS DEFINED BY WHITE STAKES AND/OR WHITE LINES

– DRAINAGE WORKS ON HOLES 7 AND 12 (INCLUDING STANCE)

– IRRIGATION EARTHWORKS AND EQUIPMENT

3- A ball lying inside, touching or near fencing around the clubhouse hazardous area must be treated as a ball in G.U.R. and relief is obtained under Rule 16.

4 – The following are to be treated as Ground Under Repair and relief MAY be taken as per Rule 16 (Nearest point of complete relief no nearer the hole)

– MAN-MADE SPOON DRAINS

5 –  PREFERRED LIES  – A ball lying through the green, may be lifted, cleaned and placed

within one handspan, except in a bunker or a penalty area.

Penalty for breach of Temporary Local Rules:

Stroke Play – Two Strokes               Match Play – Loss of Hole
